And though there are Amazonian freshwater dolphin species alive today, they aren’t close kin to that ancient cetacean. There’s the South Asian river dolphin (Platanista genus) and the Amazon river dolphin (Inia genus), also known as the pink river dolphin, and the two groups include several species and subspecies. Researchers discovered the Amazonian dolphin fossil in 2018, near the Napo River in Loreto, Peru. At first, they thought it would turn out to be an ancient relative of modern Amazonian river dolphins. “That was a moment where everybody freaked out, because it wasn’t an Amazonian river dolphin,” Benites-Palomino said.

(AP) — Prosecutors filed murder charges Tuesday against five suspects in the fatal shootings of six men at a remote dirt crossroads in the Southern California desert after what investigators said was a dispute over marijuana. The suspects each face six felony counts of murder with a special circumstance allegation of multiple murders, the San Bernardino County District Attorney's Office said in a statement. “This mass murder, done in a dark secluded desert, clearly illuminates the violence and crime that exists as a direct consequence of illegal marijuana operations,” District Attorney Jason Anderson said in Tuesday's statement. LOS ANGELES (AP) — A driver who plowed into a group of Los Angeles County sheriff's recruits on a training run last year, killing one and injuring 24 others, was charged Thursday with vehicular manslaughter, authorities said. Nicholas Gutierrez, 23, was charged with two counts of vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence and nine counts of reckless driving causing great bodily injury, according to a statement from the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office. CNN —A 79-square-mile area of Los Angeles County is under quarantine after an invasive fruit fly was found there – the first such quarantine for the pest in the Western Hemisphere, according to California officials. The Tau fruit fly, originating in Asia, is a “serious pest for agriculture and natural resources,” according to the release. It isn’t the first time the Tau fruit fly was found in California. The state agency plans to work with the US Department of Agriculture and local authorities to eliminate the Tau fruit fly and prevent its spread. Crews will cut host fruit and vegetables on properties within 200 meters of detections to inspect for fruit fly larvae, among other measures, the state agriculture agency said.

A fruit fly invasion has led to the quarantine of a 79-square-mile region of Los Angeles County. Residents are free to come and go under the quarantine, but their produce is not. But this isn't a quarantine for people, like the COVID restrictions we're all used to — it's a quarantine of fruits and vegetables only. To prevent the flies from spreading, people living in the quarantined area cannot take any fruits or vegetables off their property, the agency advised. People are advised not to remove any produce from their property to avoid spreading the invasive Tau fruit fly.
